ASHEVILLE – The single most articulate and passionate advocate of citizen action to remedy the nuclear and environmental crises, Dr Helen Caldicott, will speak on April 11 at the First Congregational Church. The event is free and will start at 7:00pm.
The event is cosponsored by Asheville Green Drinks, Safe Carolinas, Mtn Voices, & Sierra Club.
Global Campaigner for a Nuclear-Free Planet (www.nuclearfreeplanet.org) Dr. Caldicott will
reflect on the state of Nuclear world-wide in the wake of the Fukushima Daiichi disaster one
year ago. She will also discuss health issues tied to radiation here in the Southeast.
Dr. Caldicott has devoted the last 35 years to an international campaign to educate the
public about the medical hazards of the nuclear age and the necessary changes in human
behavior to stop environmental destruction. She started her career as the founder of the
Cystic Fibrosis Clinic at the Adelaide Children’s Hospital in 1975 and as an instructor in
pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and later resigned to work full time on the prevention
of nuclear war. Since this time, she has authored five books and co-founded organizations
such as the Physicians for Social Responsibility. She was also the winner of the Nobel Peace
Prize in 1985 and named one of the most influential women of the 20th Century by The
Smithsonian Institute.
As the Founder and President of the Nuclear Policy Research Institute (NPRI), Dr. Caldicott’s
mission is to facilitate a far-reaching, effective, ongoing public education campaign in the
mainstream media about the dangers of nuclear weapons, power programs and policies.
Mary Olson of Nuclear Information and Resource Service (www.nirs.org ) will open the
event, share new findings on radiation impacts and touch on the status of nuclear waste
policies that could impact WNC.
